C4+ does not exist but Pb4+ exists although both belong to the same group. This is because
I. size of carbon is much smaller than Pb. II. large amount of energy is needed in case of carbon.
III. of inert pair effect.
IV. nucleus cannot hold such a large number of electrons.
The correct statement(s) is/are
A. Only I
B. I and II
C. Only III
D. II, III and IV

Option B. C4+ does not exist but Pb4+ exists although both belong to the same group. This is because the size of carbon is much smaller than Pb and a large amount of energy is needed in the case of carbon.

  • Lead (Pb) and carbon (C) both belong to group 12 however down the group, the size of the atom increases because of an increase in shells and atomic number.
  • Since carbon has smaller size as compared to lead, it is easier for the nucleus to bind the electrons tightly. In lead, since the number of shells is more, the nucleus cannot tightly bind the outer shells.
  • This makes it easier the removal of an electron from Pb's last shell than C's last shell.
  • Hence to remove an electron, the ionization enthalpy required is higher in carbon than in lead.
