When Benzenediazonium chloride ( CHNCl ) is reacted with Copper(I) cyanide ( CuCN ) in the presence of Hydrogen cyanide ( HCN ) , Benzonitrile ( CHCN ) is formed .
CHNCl + CuCN / HCN → CHCN
- Benzonitrile is a colorless liquid . It has a sweet almond odour .
- Benzonitrile is used as a solvent .
- Benzenediazonium chloride is a colourless solid . It is soluble in polar solvents .
