When India got its independence in 1947, it set about trying to persuade the rulers of the small princely states to join the Indian Federation. But the kingdom of Kashmir, then ruled by Maharaja Hari Singh, preferred to remain independent. But when Pakistan invaded Kashmir, Hari Singh appealed to the Indian Government to help him, and agreed that in return Kashmir would join India. But much of the population in Kashmir was not happy as most of them were Muslims and wanted to join Pakistan. So India gave a special status to Kashmir, in which points like how other people from India could not permanently settle in Kashmir and could not work there permanently were highlighted in article 370 of the constitution. But the Government of India took away this privileges in 2019. Many people felt that this was unfair to the people of Kashmir, as those privileges were the only reason that Kashmir agreed to join India. As for my personal opinion, I think the special status of Kashmir should be restored
