Calcium carbide is used for artificial ripening of fruits. Actually the fruit ripens because of the heat evolved while calcium carbide reacts with moisture. During this reaction calcium hydroxide and acetylene gas is evolved. If 200 cm3 of acetylene is formed from a certain mass of calcium carbide, find the volume of oxygen required and carbon dioxide formed during the complete combustion. The combustion reaction can be represented as below:
2 C2H2 (g) + 5 O2 (g) → 4 CO2 (g) + 2 H2O(g)

APPLYING GAY - LUSSACS LAW ON THE EQUATION 500 CC OF OXYGEN IS REQUIRED AND 400 CC OF CARBON DIOXIDE WILL FORM
APPLYING GAY LUSACS LAW ON THE EQUATION
2C2H2 (G) + 5O2 (G) - 4CO2 (G) + 2H2O (G)
2 VOL. 5 VOL. 4 VOL
2 VOL. G ACETYLENE REQUIRED 5 VOL. G OF OXYGEN
20OCC OF ACETYLENE REQUIRES = 5 × 200 / 2
= 500 CC
NOW ,
FROM 2 VOL. OF ACETYLENE , CO2 FORMED 4 VOL.
FROM 200CC OF ACETYLENE
CO2 FORMED = 4 × 200 / 2
= 400 CC
500 CC OF OXYGEN REQUIRED AND 400 CC OF G CO2 WILL FORMED
