Calcium has electronic configuration 2,8,8,2. How is that possible when M shell can have maximum 18 electrons by 2n^2 formula ?

According to octet rule
a shell can hold only 8 electrons
but remember that is true for elements till atomic no. 20,i.e. till calcium
