The shells in an atom are K,L,M,N… the K shell is the first shell which is closest to the nucleus of the atom, the K shell has 2 electrons. The L shell can hold 8 electrons, M shell can hold 18 electrons but the atom can attain stability if the valence (last) shell has 8 electrons
