Answer
Firstly, rearrange the circuit
Using the figure as a reference, the red coloured part of circuit is connected in series, as we know,
» The combined resistance of any number of resistance connected in series is equal to the sum of the individual resistances. i.e.,
R = R₁ + R₂
By substituting the values in the formula,
➛ R = R₁ + R₂
➛ R = 4 + 4
➛ R = 8 ohms.
Now, R₁₂ and R₃ are connected in parallel combination,
» The reciprocal of the combined resistance of a number of resistance connected in parallel is equal to the sum of the reciprocal of all the individual resistances. .i.e.,
1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂
By substituting the values in the formula,
➛ 1/R₁₂₃ = 1/R₁₂ + 1/R₃
➛ 1/R₁₂₃ = 1/8 + 1/4
➛ 1/R₁₂₃ = 1+2/8
➛ 1/R₁₂₃ = 3/8
➛ R₁₂₃ = 8/3
➛ 1/R₁₂₃ = 2.6 ohms.
Finally, all three resistors are connected in series so,
➛ R = R₄ + R₁₂₃ + R₅
➛ R = 4 + 2.6 + 4
➛ R = 10.6 ohms.
Hence, equivalent Resistance of the circuit is 10.6 ohms.
