Mass of solute = 3.0205g

We konw : \piV = nRT    ,   where \pi is Osmotic pressure, V is volume of the solution, n is number of moles of solute in the solution, R is Rydberg constant, T is temperature.

Now, \pi = nRT/V

  • From given data, R = 0.0821 Latm/Kmol, T = 298K , V = 1L, \pi = 2 atm
  • This implies,                                                                                                        2 = n * 0.0821 * 298 / 1
  • n = 2 / 0.0821 * 298
  • n = 2 / 24.4658
  • n = 0.08175 M
  • Now, we know number of moles of solute ,                                                  n = Mass of solute in the solution / Molar mass of solute
  • Also given Molar mass of solute M = 36.95 g
  • This implies ,  n = x / M              where x is mass of solute.
  •     0.08175 = x / 36.95
  •     x = 36.95 * 0.08175
  •     x = 3.0205g
  • Therefore, mass of solute is 3.0205g.
