Example-2:In the given fig. the resistors ,R1 =5 Ω, R2=10 Ω, R3=30 Ω have been connected to a battery of 12V . Calculate-

(b) the current through each resistor and

(c) the total current in the circuit.

Answer :

b). The current through each resistor

Battery = 12v

resistors of 5 ohm, 10 ohm, 30 ohm are connected in series to battery

R1 = 5 ohm

R2 = 10 ohm

R3 = 30 ohm

as all are connect in series effective resistance would be

Reff = R1 + R2 + R3

        = 5 + 10 + 30

        = 45 HMS

By ohms law : V = IR

          I = V/R

            = 12/45

            = 0.26

Now, I ( 5 ohm) = 12/5 = 2.4 A -----(1)

         I ( 10 ohm) = 12/10 = 1.2 A -------(2)

         I ( 30 ohm) = 12/30 = 0.4 A -------(3)

As resistors are connected in series : 0.4 = 1.2 = 2.4

Hence, current across 30 ohm resistor is 0.26 A

c). the total current in the circuit is (1) + (2) + (3) ( total current is the sum of current across each resistor)

So, I = 0.4 + 1.2 + 2.4

     I = 4 A
