A mother's age is equal to the sum of the ages of her five children. If after 12 years, the sum of the ages of the children will be twice the age of their mother, how old is the mother now?

I do not usually share my life stories so openly on public platforms. But seeing how my life turned around due to some events, especially related to the topic, I thought I would share it with you all. My name is Nupur, I am from Mumbai and to talk about my childhood, it has been pretty amazing. Not just with great parents but my grades were also good. As people say I have been brilliant in studies since high school. After working hard I finally got through IIT. It was all because I was determined. This ended up getting me placed in one of the good companies. Even though life was going as per plan. I still felt scared that nothing came in my way to ruin it. I adjusted well in my new company and was soaring to touch new heights and grasp new opportunities. In the process, little did I know that

This shall be easy peasy…

Let the current age of mother be ‘X’ and let the ages of the five children be A, B, C, D and E.

Also let the sum of the current ages of the children be Y. ie

A+B+C+D+E = Y ~equation 1

The question clearly states that the current age of mother is equal to that of the sum of the current ages of the five children. So,

X = Y ~ equation 2

Now the mother's age after 12 years will be current age added 12. ie (X + 12)

Also the ages of the five children after 12 years will be (A+12), (B+12), (C+12), (D+12), (E+12).

Therefore the sum of all of the children's ages after 12 years will be :

A + 12 + B + 12 + C + 12 + D + 12 + E + 12

Which is equal to A+B+C+D+E+60

Using the equation 1, we can reduce the above to : (Y + 60)

The whole point of using A, B, C, D and E separately wa

Let Mother's present age be ' x ' years.

let a,b,c,d,e,f be age of each daughter.

let the sum of the ages a+b+c+d+ e be 'y' years.

According to the statement of the sum

x= y ……..(1)

After 12 years mother's age =( x+12) years

After 5 years Daughter's age , a+12, b+12 , c+12, d+12,e+12

Their sum a+b+c+d+e + 60 =( y + 60)

According to the second statement of the sum

y+ 60 = 2(x+12)

x+ 60 = 2(x+12) [ where x= y from 1]

x+60 = 2x+ 24

x-2x= -60+24

-x= -36

x= 36

Mother's present age is 36 years

Ans : 36 years

this is the correct answer
