Calculate the amount of work to be done to convert 100g of ice at 0°C to water at 100°C . (Latent heat of ice =80 cal/g, mechanical equivalent of heat, J=4.2J/cal)

Total heat supplied,

H=100×80+100×1×(100−0)

=8000+10000=18000cal

∴ Work done, W=JH=4.2×18000=75600J.
