Calculate the average speed if a body travels 50 km from A to B and then 40 km from B to C in total time of 3 hours.​

According to question,

Body covers first half of its total distance with speed V1 .Let the time be t1.

Using ,Speed=Distance /Time

V1=(S/2)/t1=S/2t1

t1=S/ 2 V1

and remaining distance with speed V2. let the time be t2.

V2=(S/2) /t2=S/ 2t2

t2=S/2 V2

Now the average speed is given by the relation,

Average speed=Total distance covered / Total time taken

=S /(t1 + t2)

=S/ (S/ 2 V1 +S/2 V2)

=2V1V2 /(V1+V2)
