Speed of sound in Seawater = 1500m/s

To find:

Depth of ocean bed.

Concept:

The skin emitted from the ship travels downwards , gets reflected at the sea bed and travels back to the ship.

Assumptions:

1. Ship is stationary

2. Density of sea water is same at all depths.

Calculation:

Total distance for to-fro journey

= 10 × 1500

= 15000 metres.

But ocean depth = ½(total journey)

=> Ocean depth = ½(15000)

=> Ocean depth = 7500 metres.

So final answer is 7500 metres or 7.5 km

Given:

t = 10 sec

v = 1500m/s

Let debth of the ocean be d.

Then, applying the formula

 \:  \:  \:  \: v =  \frac{2d}{t}  \\  =  >  1500 =  \frac{2d}{10}  \\ =  >  2d = 15000 \\   =  > d =  \frac{15000}{2}  \\  \therefore \: d = 7500 m

So, the debth of the ocean is 7500 metres or 7.5 km.
