Molecular formula for CH₃ COOH = C₂ H₄ O₂ -- Acetic Acid.
Molecular mass = 12 * 2 + 4 * 1 + 16 * 2 = 60 amu
Molar mass = 60 grams
Molecular formula for C₂ H₅ OH is C₂ H₆ O (or CH3 - CH2 - OH) - Ethanol or Ethyl Alcohol. The molecular mass is 2 * 12 + 6 * 1 + 16 = 46 amu.
Molar mass = 46 grams.
The difference between the two molecular formulas is that there are two Oxygen atoms attached to the central Carbon atom in Acetic acid, whereas in Ethanol there are two hydrogen atoms and one Oxygen atom attached to the central atom.
Difference in molar masses is = 14 grams
