Calculate the dot product of force and displacement if a force of 10N displaces the body through 4 meters in the direction of force.

and displacement is 4metre.

If i, j and k are unit vectors along x, y and z-axis respectively then,
i · i = j · j = k · k = 1
i · j = i · k = j · k = 0

Given that both force and displacement are in the same direction.
If i is the unit vector along their direction then,
Their dot product = (10N i) · (4m j) = 40 Nm

∴ Dot product of force and displacement is 40 Nm (= 40 Joule)
[Note: If Force and displacement were perpendicular to each other then their dot product would have been zero.]
