The empirical formula of the substance is Na₂SO₃.7H₂O.

  • Let's assume that the total mass of the given substance is 100g.
  • Therefore, we have 50 g H₂O, 19.1 g oxygen, 18.2 g sodium and 12.7 g sulfur.
  • Now, calculate the number of moles present of each element.

            H₂O = 50/18 = 2.8 moles

             Na = 18.2/23 = 0.8 moles

              O = 19.1/16 = 1.2 moles

              S = 12.7/32 = 0.4 moles

  • Divide all of the above values by the smallest number i.e., 0.4. This gives the following mole ratios:

              Na: S: O: H₂O = 2: 1: 3: 7

  • Hence, the empirical formula is Na₂SO₃.7H₂O
