The given network, shown in (Fig. 3.13) (a), can be represented as shown in (Fig. 3.13) (b) The resultant of 4Ωand8Ω resistances, which are in series in the arm EDC, is given by  

R1=4Ω+8Ω=12Ω  

Similarly, the resultant of 4Ωand8Ω in the EFC is given by  

R2=4Ω+8Ω=12Ω  

The equivslent circuit of R1andR2 which are in parallel is shown in (Fig. 3.13)( c)  

If R is the equivalent resistance between the points AandB, then  

1R=1R1+1R2=112+112=212=16  

or R=6Ω.
