so here to begin with, resistors, A and D are in series combination and resistors B and C are also in parellel combination.

but the equivalent resistance that we will get from A,D and B,C will be in parallel combination.

(i think it is sounding a bit confusing, but if you don't understand, noi worry)

so, let's call equivalent resistance of A and D be R1.

R1 = A + D

R1 = 5ohm + 7 ohm

R1 = 12ohm

then, let's call equivalent resistance of B and C as R2

R2 = B+ C

R2 = 16ohm + 8ohm

R2 = 24 ohm

now if we look, R1 and R2 are in parallel combination.

let's call equivalent resistance of R1 and R2 as R3

1/R3 = 1/R1 + 1/R2

1/R3 = 1/12 + 1/24

1/R3 = 2/24 + 1/24

1/R3 = 3/24

1/R3 = 1/8

R3 = 8ohm

so the equivalent resistance of the figure is 8 ohm.
