Hydrogen has only one electron present in its very first shell.
Now, energy of an electron in nth orbit is given by
En = −13.6n2 eV
For, ground state of Hydrogen, n = 1.
So, energy of ground state = -13.6 eV
Now, first excitation means electron jumps from first shell to second shell.
So, energy associated with the second shell is the first excitation energy.
So, first excitation energy = Energy of second shell = −13.622= −3.4 eV
