The relative formula mass of an ionic compound is the ratio of the averagemass of one formula unit of the ionic compound to the mass of 1/12 themass of a carbon-12 atom. Thus, to obtain the formula mass of Al2(SO4)3, just add up the relative atomic masses of every atom in one formula unit.

•molar mass of Al = 27
•molar mass of S = 32
•molar mass of O = 16
•molar mass of Al2(SO4)3 = 27×2 + 32 × 3 + 16 ×4×3
= 342 g/mole.
