mass of ca= 40u

mass of h=1u

mass of c=12u

mass of o =16u

formula unit mass of Ca(HCO3)2 is 40+(1+12+16*3)*2=162

balasahebadmane1965: 40+2+24+96=162.

Given: Ca(HCO3)₂ Calcium bicarbonate

To Find: Its formula unit mass

Solution:

The following information can be noted from the modern periodic table:

The atomic mass of Calcium(Ca) is 40 u

The atomic mass of Hydrogen(H) is 1 u

The atomic mass of Carbon(C) is 12 u

The atomic mass of Oxygen(O) is 16 u

From the chemical formula of calcium bicarbonate [Ca(HCO3)₂ ], we see that

One formula unit of Calcium bicarbonate consists of  1 atom of Calcium, 2 atoms of hydrogen, 2 atoms of carbon, 6 atoms of oxygen

Mass of formula unit of Ca(HCO3)₂ = 1x atomic mass of Ca +2xatomic mass of H + 2x atomic mass of C + 6x atomic mass of O

Mass of formula unit of Ca(HCO3)₂ =  40 + 2x 1 + 2x 12 + 6x 16

                                                           = 162u

Therefore, the mass of a formula unit of Ca(HCO3)₂ is 162u.
