Given:

Organ pipe of length, l =  4cm

Temperature of the pipe = 35°C

To Find:

The fundamental frequency of the wave in the organ pipe.

Solution:

Fundamental frequency of the organ pipe is given by,

  • f = V/4L
  • V is the velocity of sound.

Velocity of sound varies with room temperature as:

  • V = Vo√T/273 ,
  • T is in Kelvin, Vo is velocity at room temperature.
  • Vo = 346m/s
  • V = 346  x √273+35/273 = 346 x √308/273 = 367.5 m/s

Therefore fundamental frequency ,

  • f = 367.5/4 x 0.04 = 2296.9 Hz = 2.296KHz

The fundamental frequency of the wave in an organ pipe of length 4cm which is closed at one end is 2.296KHz.
