The magnetic moment is given by the square root of n(n+2) where n is the number of unpaired electrons.

For ex: in Cr3+ the number of unpaired electrons is 3 (4s^0 3d^3). So n=3, n(n+2)=3*5=15 and magnetic moment is square root of 15=3.873
