Question

Calculate the mass of nitrogen in 120 kg of Ammonium nitrate .

( N = 14 , H = 1 , O = 16 ).

Solution

we have given 120 kg of ammonium nitrate ( NH₄NO₃ )

▸Let us firstly find the molar mass of ammonium nitrate.

molar mass of NH₄NO₃ = 2(14) + 4(1) + 3(16)

                                       = 28 + 4 + 48

                                       = 80  g

▸ Finding the no. of moles  present in 120 kg ammonium nitrate.

no. of moles

of NH₄NO₃ present = 120000 / 80

                                 = 1500   moles

No. of  N₂  moles present in 1500 moles of ammonium nitrate

In   1 mole of NH₄NO₃  there is 1  mole of N₂ .

therefore, 1500 moles of ammonium nitrate will have 1500 moles of N₂ .

Mass of 1500 moles of N₂

mass of 1 mole of N₂ = 2 (14) = 28 g

so,

mass of 1500 moles of N₂ = 1500 × 28  g

or,

mass of Nitrogen in

120 kg of NH₄NO₃ = 42000 g

                                         = 42 kg

Therefore,

mass of nitrogen in 120 kg of ammonium nitrate is 42 kg .
