Given :

Methanol (CH_{3}OH) contains carbon and hydrogen.

To Find :

The mass percentage of hydrogen and carbon in methanol (CH_{3}OH)

Solution :

Molar Mass of Methanol (CH_{3}OH) = 12 + 3x1 + 16 + 1

                                                        = 12 + 3 +17

                                                       = 32

Percentage of Hydrogen in CH_{3}OH = \frac{4}{32} × 100%

                                          =  12.5%

Percentage of Carbon in CH_{3}OH = \frac{12}{32} × 100%

                                                       =  37.5%

The mass percentage of hydrogen and carbon in methanol CH3OH is  12.5% and 37.48% respectively

Explanation:

Methanol CH3OH contains carbon and hydrogen.

The mass percentage of hydrogen and carbon in methanol  CH3OH  is calculated as follows :-

Molar Mass of Methanol  CH3OH  = 12 + 3x1 + 16 + 1

                                                      = 12 + 3 +17

                                                      = 32

Percentage of Carbon in CH3OH =12.01 / 32.042 X 100 = 37.48% %

Percentage of hydrogen in CH3OH = 4.032 x 100 / 32.042

                                                        = 12.5% %
