The Moles Fraction Of Sodium Hydroxide in 10% w/w NaOH solution is 0.047

GIVEN:

Mass percentage of NaOH solution = 10%

TO FIND :

Mole fraction of SODIUM hydroxide.

SOLUTION:

10 % w/w of NaOH means that 10 grams of sodium hydroxide is present in 100 grams of solution.

Mass of NaOH = 10grams

Molar mass of NaOH = 23 + 16 + 1 = 40 grams

Number of moles of NaOH

= given mass /molar mass

= 10 /40.

= 0.25 moles.

Mass of water = 100 -10 = 90 grams.

Molar mass of water = 18 grams.

Number of moles of Water present in the solution= 90/18 = 5 moles

Mole fraction of Sodium hydroxide =

 \frac{Moles of NaOH }{moles \: sodium \: hydroxide \: and \: water}

=

 \frac{0.25}{0.25 + 5}

= 0.047

Hence, The Moles Fraction Of Sodium Hydroxide is 0.047
