Given: Atomic mass of sodium, Na = 23g

           The atomic mass of hydrogen, H = 1g

           The atomicc mass of carbon, C = 12g

           The atomic mass of oxygen, O = 16g

To Find: Molecular mass of sodium bicarbonate(NaHCO₃), M.

Solution:

To calculate M, the concept used :

  • Molecular mass of any molecule or compound can be calculated as the sum total of the atomic masses of each element or atom present in its chemical formula.
  • It is measured in g/mol.
  • In the NaHCO₃ compound, there is one sodium atom, 1 hydrogen atom, 1 carbon atom, and three oxygen atoms.

So, M = atomic mass of (Na + H+ C+ 3 x O)

     M = 1 x 23 + 1 x 1 + 1 x 12+ 3x 16

         = 23 +1 +12 +48

         = 23 + 13 +48

        = 23 + 61

        = 84 g/mol

    M = 84g/mol

Hence molecular mass of NaHCO₃ is 84g/mol.
