Question:–

  • Calculate the molecular masses of the following compounds:—
  • • Copper sulphate crystals
  • • Ammonium sulphate

To find:–

  • We have to calculate Molecular masses of Copper sulphate crystals and Ammonium sulphate

Some common information:–

Relative atomic masses :-

  • Cu = 63.5
  • S = 32
  • O = 16
  • N = 14
  • H = 1

Chemical formula:-

  • Copper sulphate crystals = CuSo4.5H2O
  • Ammonium sulphate = (NH4)2SO4

Solution:–

1. Copper sulphate crystals

Evaluating masses.

= 63.5 + 32 + (16×4) + 5(1×2+16)

= 90 + 159.5

= 249.5 a.m.u.

2. Ammonium sulphate

Evaluating masses.

= 2(14+1×4) + 32 + (16×4)

= 2 × 18 + 32 + 64

= 132 a.m.u.
