What is Oxidation Number ?

\huge{→} Oxidation number of an atom is the charge it appears to have when we count the electrons according to some arbitrary rules.

Here in Question :-

  • Oxidation Number Of \sf{HNO_3}

Oxidation number of N = ?

We know that :

Oxidation Number of H = +1

Oxidation Number of O = -2

Let , Oxidation Number of N = x

So ,

\large\implies{\sf 1+x(3×(-2))=0 }

\large\implies{\sf 1+x-6=0 }

\large\implies{\sf x=5 }

  • Oxidation Number of \sf{HPO} :

Here

Oxidation Number of H = +1

Oxidation Number Of O = -2

Let , Oxidation Number of P = x

So ,

\large\implies{\sf 1+x+(-2×1) }

\large\implies{\sf x=1 }

Hence ,

Oxidation Number of N in \sf{HNO_3} is +5

And

Oxidation Number of P in \sf{HPO} is +1
