we have to calculate the mass of oxygen required to convert 2.4 kg of graphite to Carbon dioxide.

solution : graphite is one of allotropes of carbon. when it is burning in the presence of air, it converts into carbon dioxide.

i.e., C(graphite) + O₂ ⇒CO₂

here you see, one mole of graphite reacts with one mole of oxygen to form one mole of carbon dioxide.

or, 12 g of graphite reacts with 32g of oxygen.

or, 1g of graphite reacts with 32/12 g of oxygen

or, 2.4 kg of graphite = 32/12 × 2.4 kg of oxygen

= 32/5 = 6.4 kg

Therefore the mass of oxygen required to convert 2.4kg of graphite to Carbon dioxide is 6.4 kg.
