Calculate the P.E of an object of mass 50kg raised to a height of 4m above the ground. If the object falls down, what is the K.E when it has fallen through 2m? What is the velocity of the object when it just touches the ground?

Answer:

P.E.= mgh

= 50×9.8×4

= 1960J

Velocity at 2m

v^2-u^2=2as

= v^2-0=2gs

= v^2=2×9.8×2

= v^2=39.2

= v=6.26 m/s

therefore kinetic energy at 2m = 1/2mv^2

= 1/2×50×39.2

= 980J

Velocity when the ball reaches the ground

v^2= 2gs

v^2= 2×9.8×4

v^2= 78.4

v = 8.854
