As the charge on electron is 4.8 x 10-10 e.s.u.

Assuming 100 % ionic the dipole moment of HX will be = q x d = 4.8 x 10-10 e.s.u. x 1.62 x 10-8 cm = 7.78 x 10-18 e.s.u. cm = 7.78 D

% Ionic Character = observed dipole moment ×100/Calculated dipole moment at 100% ionic

Ionic Character =0.39 D/ 7.78×100=5 %

Therefore, % Covalent Character = 100 − 5 = 95 %
