Answer :-

  • Magnesium - 28.57 %
  • Carbon - 14.28%
  • Oxygen - 57.14%

Given to calculate the Percentage of composition of Magnesium carbonate (MgCO)

SOLUTION :-

Percentage composition of each element can be calculated by

Percentage composition = Mass of element/Total weight of compound × 100

So, Firstly Lets calculate compound weight (MgCO₃)

⚛ Atomic mass of Magnesium(Mg) = 24

Atomic mass of Carbon (C) = 12

Atomic mass of Oxygen (O) = 16

MgCO₃ = Mg + C + 3 atoms of Oxygen

= 24 + 12 + 3(16)

= 24+12 +48

= 84

Weight of (MgCO₃) is 84

Percentage composition of Magnesium = 24/84 × 100

= 2/7 × 100

= 200/7

= 28.57 %

Percentage composition of Carbon = 12/84 × 100

= 1/7 × 100

= 100/7

= 14.28%

Percentage composition of Oxygen₃ = 48/84 ×100

= 4/7 ×100

= 4×100/7

=400/7

= 57.14%
