Answer:

The pH of 10⁻⁸ HCl solution taking into account the h+ produced by water will be 6.98.

Explanation:

10⁻⁸ HCl will dissociates to give 10⁻⁸ H⁺ ions

Similarly water will dissociates to give equal concentration of H⁺ and OH⁻ ions

H₂O = H⁺ + OH⁻

[H⁺] = [OH⁻] = x lets say

Hence in the solution, net concentration of H⁺ ions will be (x + 10⁻⁸)

=> (x + 10⁻⁸)(x) = 10⁻¹⁴

=> x² + 10⁻⁸x - 10⁻¹⁴ = 0

=> x = 9.5 x 10⁻⁸

So,

[H⁺] = (x + 10⁻⁸) = 9.5 x 10⁻⁸ + 10⁻⁸ = 10.5 x 10⁻⁸

=> pH = -log[H⁺]

= -log[10.5 x 10⁻⁸]

= 6.98

Hence the pH of 10⁻⁸ HCl solution taking into account the h+ produced by water will be 6.98.
