Given:

Carbon dioxide molecule  ( O = C = O )

To find:

The ratio of number of pure and hybrid orbitals of central atom used for bonding

Solution:

Number of Hybrid Orbital = number of Carbon atoms × (number denoting the hybridization of carbon)

In CO₂ hybridization of C is sp i.ee hybridization number =2

Number of Hybrid Orbitals = 1 X 2 = 2

Number of Pure Orbital = number of Hydrogen atoms present +2× (no of π-bonds present)

In CO₂, there are 2 π bonds

So, Number of Pure Orbitals = 0 + 2 X 2 = 4

Hence, the ratio is 4 : 2 = 2 : 1
