Refractive index = Speed of light in vaccum / Speed of light in water. It is denotes as n = c / v, v = c / n= 3 × 10^8 m/s / (1.33) = 2.25 × 10^8 m/s. Therefore, refractive index of the water can be measure by the Speed of light in water is 2.25 × 10^8 m/s.

Question :-

Calculate the speed of light in water when the refractive index of water is 1.33.

Given :-

  • Refractive index of water = 1.33

To Find :-

  • Calculate the speed of light in water ?

Solution :-

As we know that ,

Refractive index of water =

 \frac{ \: Speed  \: of \:  light \:  in \:  vacuum \:   }{ \: Speed \:  of \:  light  \: in \:  water \: }

Speed of light in water =

 \frac{ \: Speed \:  of \:  light  \: in \: vacuum \: }{ \: refractive \: index \: of \:  water \: }

 \frac{3.0 \:  \times  {10}^{8} \: meter \: per \: second }{1.33}

 =  2.26 \:  \times  {10}^{8} meter \: per \: second \:

↠ So, Light travels in water at the speed of 2.26 × 10⁸ m/s .
