the atomic no. of potassium is 19

the electrons would be filled in the shell as

2,8,8,1...................here it has one electron in its outermost shell so it will loose it to become Valence shell.By this the valency of potassium is +1.

note- it will not gain electron as it need high amount of energy so it would be easy for potassium to loose an electron.
