Answer:

As the chemical formula of water(H2O) states that water molecule is build from one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms.

The Water molecule has three degrees of vibrational and rotational freedom.

These  can be  labelled as v1, v2 and v3 and are referred to as  the normal modes of vibration of the molecule.

The total number of vibrational degrees of freedom of a water molecule is equal to three.

  • Water molecule consists of three atoms ( one oxygen and two hydrogen)
  • Water molecule has a non-linear structure.
  • The total number of translational and rotational degree of freedoms of a water molecule is equal to six ( three each).
  • The toatal nymber of degress of freedom of any molecule is equal to 3n, where n is the number of atoms.
  • Total number of degree of freedom of a water molecule is equal to 9.
  • Number of vibrational degree of freedom is the difference between the total and the transaltional and rotational degree combined.Hence, total number of vibrational degree of freedom is equal to 3.
