Calculate the work done by gravity when Satellite is moving around the Earth in circular orbit if radius 36000 Km?​

Radius of circular orbit = 36000 km

To find:

Work done by gravity on the satellite.

Solution:

We know that Work done = Force*Displacement* cosθ

  • Here force is the gravitational force acting on the satellite,
  • Displacement is along the circular orbit,
  • θ is the angle between force and displacement vector.

Since force acts in the perpendicular direction (towards the center of the earth) from the displacement vector (along the circular orbit)

Therefore cos θ = cos 90° = 0

Work done = 0

Therefore work done by gravity on the satellite will be 0.
