Length of x = AD - AB

Assume the Δ ACD

The length of AD = z

12² + z² = 20² (Pythagoras Theorem)

144 + z² = 400

z² = 400 - 144

z² = 256

z = 16

Hence the length of AD = 16 cm

Assume the ΔACB

AB = y

12² + y² = 15² (Pythagoras Theorem)

144 + y² = 225

y² = 225 - 144

y² = 81

y = 9

Hence AB = 9 cm

x = AD - AB

= 16 cm - 9 cm

= 7 cm
