Calvin purchased some candles at 3 for $ 5 and sold them at 5 for $ 12. Thus, Calvin gained $ 143 in all. How many candles did Calvin purchase?

∴ Given that Cost price of 3 candles = 5.

Then, Cost price of 1 candle = (5/3).

∴ Given that Selling price of 5 candles = 12.

Then, Selling price of 1 candle = (12/5).

∴ Profit per candle = (12/5) - (5/3)

                               = (36/15) - (25/15)

                               = (36 - 25)/15

                               = 11/15.


So, on buying 1 candle he gains (11/15) rupees.

Given that he gained 143 in all.

Hence, Number of candles = 143 * (15/11)

                                             = 195.


Therefore, Calvin purchased 195 candles.
