Falls are a major health problem among the elderly people. The health care cost associated with it is great. Falls can cause hip fractures, head injuries and broken bones or they can make the older adults fearful and depressed. So it is essential to take some steps to reduce the risk of falls.

The following steps can be taken to prevent falls:

1. Find out if the elderly person is concerned about falling, dizziness or balance. Ask him to discuss it with his doctor or caregiver.

2. If the elder person wears glasses take him for regular eye checkups.

3. If you notice that a person has to hold on to walls or furniture while walking or has difficulty in getting up from a chair take him to a physical therapist. He can help in improving hi balance, strength, and gait through exercise.

4. If there are elderly people in the house increase the lighting throughout the house.

5. Ensure that there are rails on both sides of all the stairs used by elders.

6. Install grab bars in the bathrooms.
