Peggy and Maddie were close friends .Peggy was the most popular girl . She was rich , pretty and popular whereas Maddie was not very rich and usually wore Peggy's hand me downs. Maddie could identify with Wanda's feelings when the girls and Peggy belittled her because of her clothes, because she herself was poor. Maddie felt sad and embarrassed for Wanda but still chose to stand by Peggy and not do anything because she was afraid that she would become the girl's next target . Maddie valued her friendship with Peggy and didn't want to ruin. her bond with Peggy by confronting her and asking her to stop teasing Wanda. She also convinced herself that Peggy was the best liked girl in school so she couldn't do anything wrong.
