Can a body have a multiple motion at the same time? explain with an example
Answers
Sometime a body can have more than one type of motion. Such a motion is called the mixed motion.
Example :
(i) The wheels of a moving train have both the translatory as well as the rotatory motions as it moves from position A to position B while rotating
Wheel is doing rotational motion as well as it is moving in a straight line covering distances.
(ii) The earth rotates about its axis (rotatory motion) and at the same time it revolves around the sun in a curved path (curvilinear or circular motion) in a fixed time interval (periodic motion).
One of the best example is the helical path travelled by a charged particle when released with some velocity making an angle acute with the magnetic field vector.
In case of helical motion the charged particle is performing circular motion along with straight line motion as shown in the image
