An object which moves in positive direction has a positive velocity . If the object is slowing down then it acceleration vector is directed in the opposite direction as it motion .(in this case , a negative acceleration )

A body can have positive acceleration as well as negative acceleration.

What is acceleration?

  • Acceleration is the rate the of change of velocity with time.
  • It is a vector quantity and has magnitude as well as direction.
  • Acceleration can be negative or positive.

Positive acceleration:

  • Positive acceleration is when the velocity of object increases with time.
  • Example is a car starting from rest or when a body is thrown downwards from a height.

Negative acceleration:

  • Negative acceleration is when velocity of a body decreases with time.
  • Example is a car coming to rest by applying brakes or when an object is thrown vertically upwards, then the body undergoes deceleration due to the force of gravity acting downwards.
  • Negative acceleration is also called deceleration.
