A body can have positive acceleration as well as negative acceleration.
What is acceleration?
- Acceleration is the rate the of change of velocity with time.
- It is a vector quantity and has magnitude as well as direction.
- Acceleration can be negative or positive.
Positive acceleration:
- Positive acceleration is when the velocity of object increases with time.
- Example is a car starting from rest or when a body is thrown downwards from a height.
Negative acceleration:
- Negative acceleration is when velocity of a body decreases with time.
- Example is a car coming to rest by applying brakes or when an object is thrown vertically upwards, then the body undergoes deceleration due to the force of gravity acting downwards.
- Negative acceleration is also called deceleration.
