     Combination Reaction : A Redox Reaction

    Consider a simple combination reaction where carbon and oxygen forms carbon dioxide,

   \bold{\mathff{C+O_2\: \longrightarrow CO_2}}

         In the above reaction, carbon (C) and oxygen (\bold{\mathff{O_2}}) are in elementary form and have  oxidation number of zero.

           Looking at the product, \bold{\mathff{CO_2}} ,oxidation number of carbon is 4 and oxygen is -2. Hence carbon is oxidized (increase in  oxidation number) and oxygen is reduced (decrease in oxidation number). Therefore, it is a redox reaction.

This verify that a combination reaction can be a redox reaction.

Hey mates

Here is your answer

Combination Reaction : A Redox Reaction

Consider a simple combination reaction where carbon and oxygen forms carbon dioxide,

In the above reaction, carbon (C) and oxygen ( ) are in elementary form and have oxidation number of zero.

Looking at the product, ,oxidation number of carbon is 4 and oxygen is -2. Hence carbon is oxidized (increase in oxidation number) and oxygen is reduced (decrease in oxidation number). Therefore, it is a redox reaction.

This verify that a combination reaction can be a redox reaction.
