can a transformer work when it is connected to a d.c source ? explain .

A transformer works when the magnetic lines of force linked with the primary and secondary coils change . in case of direct current , there is no change in the magnetic lines of force . hence , a transformer does not work on d.c .

No, because a DC current cannot cause inductance .so if you connect DC voltage across primary you will end by short circuiting.
