Can an electromagnet be used to separate wooden articles from a heap of junk? Explain. Can it be used to separate iron nails from a heap of junk in absence of power?

The answers of the given questions are as follows -

  • No, an electromagnet cannot be used to seperate wooden articles from a junk. Because, electromagnet is only able to attract iron objects, just like a normal magnet. Any other material cannot be attracted by electromagnet (ie. wood).
  • No, an electromagnet cannot be used in the absence of electricity, because the source of the electromagnetism of an electromagnet is the electricity flow. Once the flow is turned off, the electromagnetism will be also deactivated at the same moment.
