In Riders to the Sea, Maurya fears that her son eldest Michael has drowned in the sea. Maurya's other son, Bartley, rides off to search for Michael and discovers that he has died. Bartley's horse throws him, and he drowns, like Michael.
Aggrieved peasant Maurya has already lost six loved ones to the ocean: her father-in-law, her husband, and four of her sons. Her only surviving sons are Michael and Bartley.
While Maurya is sleeping, her daughters Cathleen and Nora learn that Michael's body has washed up on shore. They keep this information from Maurya and Bartley, however.
Bartley rides off to find Michael. Discovering that Michael is dead, Bartley is thrown by his horse and swept out into sea, where he drowns. Maurya's loss is then complete.
