can any one helps me sum this up The Balkans. The Balkans, as you might expect, are located on the Balkan Peninsula. This region is composed of the countries of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, and European Turkey. This area is one of the world's hot spots. It is a place frequently plagued by ethnic conflict. In fact, the term balkanization has come to mean the division of an area into smaller, usually hostile regions. Yugoslavia provides us with an excellent example of balkanization. After the end of World War I, the country once known as Yugoslavia was created. Ethnic groups formed republics within the country. These republics included: Serbia; Croatia; Montenegro; Bosnia and Herzegovina; Slovenia; and Macedonia. These groups had different opinions on how the country should be run. Serbia was the largest republic with the most people. It therefore had the most power and ran the national government. This led to conflict with other republics in the region. Like people all over the world, many of the people in Yugoslavia's republics wanted to govern themselves. A number of these nations won their independence through relatively peaceful means, while others gained self-rule through warfare. By 2003, the country of Yugoslavia ceased to exist. In its place were the countries of Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Croatia, and Macedonia. In 2008, Kosovo declared its independence. The largest ethnic groups in the region are the Serbs and the Croats. However, the region is still not at peace. Ethnic tensions continue to threaten the region.
